Reflections on life in Houston

I am so mentally in Houston right now. That might seem odd since I'm also physically in Houston right now, but I've been sitting here reading The Irresistible Revolution the last half hour dreaming about whether my friends and I (and when I say friends I also mean my homeboy H.S., as in Holy Spirit) could ever pull such a thing off... And all of my possible dream cases are of places in and around Houston. It's a sad day to think that I'm no longer thinking of ministry in Denver, but that's pretty much where I'm at right now. And it feels a little sweet to go along with that bitter. What's next? Who knows...

Tomorrow officially marks 1 year of knowing people from the Table since Sept 30th was when I first got to know Cat. To think about what my life looked like before that and then think about where I'm at right now, I shudder to think about where I would be had the Lord not intervened and brought me into this whole new world of fellowship, challenge and growth. I am forever grateful.

Work and the meaning of life

"A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind." - Ecclesiastes 2:24-26

This strikes a chord with me as a deal with disillusionment about the value of my work this week. May God show me and others how to be satisfied in all we do and to glorify Him along the way!

Martin Luther, on the brain

Have Martin Luther on the mind lately, ever since Bonhoeffer quoted him with "sin boldly, but rejoice in Christ more boldly still " (rough paraphrase). So I looked up some Luther quotes today at lunch and found this gem:

"You should not believe your conscience and your feelings more than the word which the Lord who receives sinners preaches to you. " - Martin Luther

Amen.

Loneliness

"According to Mother Teresa, it is among the wealthy that we can find the most terrible poverty of all - loneliness. So perhaps I was still among the poorest of the poor, but these poor folks had some cash!" from "The Irresistible Revolution"

"Jesus wrecked my life..."

"But me, I had it together. I used to be cool. And then I met Jesus and he wrecked my life. The more I read the gospel, the more it messed me up, turning everything I believed in, valued, and hoped for upside-down. I am still recovering from my conversion." - Shane Claiborne, "The Irresistible Revolution"

My Brain Meets The Digital Information Age

I'm blogging from atop my bed now thanks to the wonders of technology... I finally figured out that I should have an iPhone app for blogging so that all those genius ideas I have throughout the day could make it out onto my blog! This could be genius or completely foolish... Only time will tell.

No extra special thoughts at this time. About to start the reading I thought I would start 4 hours ago. My how time passes! House was incredibly good tonight.
